Faculty Leader: Kerry Camm

The Technology faculty is an exciting and popular place to work and learn.  The faculty delivers a range of projects in the subjects of Hospitality & Catering, Product Design, Textiles, ICT, Business Skills and STEM. Most subjects are delivered through a series of theory and practical lessons.

Key Stage 3

Year 7

In Year 7, modules are undertaken on a carousel system with 3-4 rotations a year. Students will complete approximately 10-12 weeks in each area. In Food Technology the focus is on Healthy Eating; in Textiles Technology they will make a ‘multicultural themed’ fabric embellished sample; in Resistant Materials and Graphics they design and make a mechanical toy and they may also produce a pop-up card.

Year 8

In Year 8, modules are undertaken on a carousel system with 3-4 rotations a year. Students will complete approximately 10-12 weeks in each area.  In Food Technology the focus is on Multicultural Travel Food; in Textiles Technology they will design and make a hat or similar product; in Resistant Materials and Graphics they design and make a clock and they may also produce a board game.

Year 9

In Year 9, modules are undertaken on a carousel system with 3-4 rotations a year. Students will complete approximately 10-12 weeks in each area.  In Food Technology the focus is on making a range of food products for a Catering Company; in Textiles Technology they will design and make a bag; in Systems & Control and Electronics the focus is on amps for an MP3 player. In Graphics they may also work on Photoshop to design products around a festival theme.

Key Stage 4

Year 10

In Year 10, students who are studying at GCSE level will follow the relevant exam specification and complete mini projects/units before embarking on their controlled assessment.  Year 10 Hospitality & Catering students will complete skills to prepare them for their internal and external examinations. Year 10 Business students will follow a series of units and complete individual case studies.

Year 11

In Year 11, Hospitality & Catering students will complete their controlled assessment projects which then lead into the dedicated revision stage. Students choose their projects from a range of design briefs and need to have developed a high level of independence.  Catering students will complete their internal and external(online) examinationsYear 11 Business students will continue to follow a series of units and complete individual case studies before revising for two external exams.

Home study at Key Stage 4

Students are set a weekly home study. Homework does vary from class to class but will be based mainly around the current module and revision themes. Feedback is given on a regular basis and all students are given dedicated improvement time to act on the feedback.
