The Learning Resources Centre supporting the Curriculum

The LRC supports students to become independent learners

Opportunities are built in and around the curriculum for students to stretch themselves and to practise their skills across curriculum areas. The Reading for Meaning programme led by the LRC Manager and delivered during our Tutor Time programme, incorporates a Literacy strand of activities designed to support students’ development of skills in three areas:

  1. Reading enthusiasm and stamina - literacy enrichment activities based around our celebrations of reading, poetry and creative writing
  2. vocabulary focus – activities to stimulate and widen students’ word power and problem solving abilities
  3. skills focus – activities to model and embed effective strategies when our students read and research

By working in groups to solve problems and fine tune individuals literacy skills, our students become effective and successful independent learners.

The LRC supports Teaching and Learning across the curriculum

Our students benefit from accessing a stimulating, well-resourced environment suitable for research, reading and teaching. Working collaboratively with staff, the LRC Manager can target available resources to match the curriculum being taught by the Faculties. On average 18 out of the 20 lessons taught in a week are booked for teaching and learning in the LRC across both key stages. Whether learning in groups or individually, the LRC supports teaching by providing a flexible space, along with resources. In the last academic year, the LRC provided 92 different topic resources collections for use in the LRC and classrooms, with diverse subject areas ranging from Acids and Alkalis to Volcanoes.
