Aspiring sports leaders take on new qualification
A group of Year 8, 9 and 10 Sports Captains, sports ambassadors and mentors took part in the first day of a Level 1 Sports Leader Qualification. The Level 1 Qualification in Sports Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to assist in leading purposeful and enjoyable sport/physical activity.
Day one was a success with a variety of theory and practical knowledge gained. The content included an introduction to the 5 main skills that pupils would need to succeed in a leadership role, as well as in a workplace: communication, self-belief, teamwork, self-management and problem solving. All of these skills were presented both practically and theoretically, with the pupils completing team building and communication activities practically, and self-belief, problem solving and self-management tasks theoretically in a classroom. The cohort were excellent on the day, displaying full effort and enthusiasm throughout the day and building new connections with their fellow sports captains.
In the afternoon, pupils had an attempt at creating and leading on a conditioned invasion game to the rest of the group, which gave them a chance to demonstrate their leadership and communication skills that they had developed throughout the day. There was an excellent display of creativity and leadership throughout the day. It was great to see all the sports captains thriving and being supportive of one another.
“It was really good to experience a bit of theory sports studies work as it was a good insight to what GCSE could be like, said Skye, Year 9. “It was great to meet new people with the same interests as me and it helped me branch out of my comfort zone. It was a great balance between practical and theory while exploring all the qualities we’d need to be good leaders. I think I successfully contributed my ideas for games and now understand all the things I need to improve.”
Year 10 student Serwaa said: “I really enjoyed starting this course today. It was fun, interactive and I was given the opportunity to learn new leadership skills.” Anh in Year 10 said: “The first day of the leadership course was so fun, we were all able to learn new leadership skills and warm up to different year groups and come out of our comfort zones.”
Miss Parsons praised the students for their enthusiasm throughout the day, saying how impressed she was with their energy and enthusiasm. The next planned days to complete the course are 3rd and 8th July, where pupils will begin to plan and deliver a leadership lesson in order to gain their qualification.
