Bite the Ballot
During an interactive session on 24
th
March, we invited
t
o run a session with Year 9 and 10
students to help them discover why it is important for
them to understand politics and the impact it has on their
lives, now and in the future.
Students were told that currently only a quarter of 18-25
year olds use their vote, meaning that political parties do
not focus on the needs of this age group and more budget
cuts are likely to affect this sector than, for example, the
65+ age group where 75% of people vote.
During the session students got to discuss a variety of
issues and had the opportunity to ―vote on their feet,‖
which allowed them to realise that if they want their views
to be taken seriously they need to vote. They also got a
look at how public money is spent and how their choice of
political party could influence where that money is spent.
Most of the students arrived to the sessions thinking politics is ‗boring‘ or doesn‘t affect them. By the end of the sessions they
realised that if they don‘t vote and think about politics, then they will have no influence to make a difference to real issues that
affect their lives.
Year 9 and 10 left the sessions understanding the why it is
important for them to register to vote, and use their vote
Our group of young scholars who have recently completed their programme of
study with
enjoyed a rewarding graduation day at the University
of Sussex on Saturday 16
th
May. Luckily the sun was shining as parents,
grandparents and siblings accompanied us to an information session followed by
a tour of the campus before the official ceremony began.
There was an enormous sense of pride as our students‘ names were read out
before they went to collect their certificates, at which point the crowd cheered
and whooped in congratulation! Two of the Year 7 students even passed with
distinctions; congratulations to Hope who received a Distinction for Effort and Jay
who received a Distinction for
Attainment
.
The day was thoroughly enjoyable for all and a great way to celebrate this
fantastic achievement
for our students!
A short video of the
ceremony is available
to view on our
website.
Congratulations to Lewis who has
left school with an amazing
100% ATTENDANCE record over
his 5 years at Nova.
We wish you every success!
