Final 3D product from the printer
IET Faraday Day
ave been setting a challenge across schools and colleges around the country in search of an overall winner and on 6th May we
invited The Dorcan Academy, Isambard Community School and Highworth Warneford School to compete with six of our Year 8 students in
the competition.
Students had to research, design and make a prototype solution to a genuinely
tough engineering problem. All four teams worked amazingly hard throughout the
day and should be really proud of their outcomes. Our six Year 8 boys did
themselves proud with an innovative solution to the problem. All the students from
each of the schools had a really good time and learnt about electronics, computer
aided design and 3D printing along the way.
The winners were the team from Highworth Warneford, who were awarded a
school trophy and Amazon vouchers for the students.

Talented linguists in speaking
competition
Nova Hreod recently hosted the south west leg of the
peaking competition. The competition is open
to all secondary students from any south west school and
provides an opportunity for students to use their foreign
language outside the classroom.
The competition ran in three age groups (KS3-5) in
two categories: ‗non-native speakers‘ and ‗near-
native speakers.‘ The winner in each category
received a cup and certificate. Competitors were
able to use creativity, imagination and an element of
drama in their presentations, but they had to be the
student‘s original work. Students were marked on
their presentation as well as on their language skills
(spontaneity, fluency, accent, interest, range of language
and originality) by a panel of judges, and a range of prizes
and certificates were awarded.
We are extremely proud that we were represented in the
competition by two talented linguists with success in both
categories – Chloe from Year 10 was awarded a certificate of
merit in the KS4 category and Year 7‘s Katie was runner-up in
the KS3 category, winning a place at the regional final in Bath
on 24
th
June.
