staggering total of 2,416 books between them and the top three readers in
Year 7 have been appointed as Reading Champions
.
During the weekly reading sessions taking place
in Accelerated Learning Time, our Key Stage 3
students are participating in reading linked
challenges during June‘s Share A Story Month.
The activities include challenging their inner
Wimpy Kid in The Diary of a Wimpy Kid quiz;
listening to a selection of the Radio 2 ‗500
Words‗ shortlisted stories; book talking
activities; testing students‘ knowledge of visiting
authors in the Nova‘s authors quiz and reading
Nova‘s ‗Tolerance‘ creative writing entries.
University of Cardiff Future Scholars Day
On 20th May, Mr Watkins took a select group of Year 9 students to Cardiff University to
experience a taste of life at a Russell Group University. The day of activities was organised by
the University to encourage Year 9 students from around the country to start thinking about
their future and setting the highest aspirations.
After a talk from lecturers and University students with the key message being ―setting your sights on the top level of education is within the reach of
anyone who is willing to put in the hard work required,‖ students were introduced to the other side of student life through an interactive session with
one of the university‘s many social societies, where we took part in a fantastic A Capella rendition of Imagine Dragons‘ ―It‘s Time‖ and got a first-hand
experience of some of the personal development and enrichment that university life can offer such as the choir, sports clubs and even Custard
Wrestling!
The final session of the day was a talk from industry leading researchers within the Business and Economics department, and a tour of their new
£13,500,000 business suite and replica stock exchange.
Our students were exceptional representatives of Nova Hreod Academy and came away with lots of valuable information. One student went so far as to
say that they are now completely set on attending university, both for the academic opportunity and the personal development.
s a reading programme from
Booktrust, which supports schools to encourage
reading for pleasure, independent choice and
develop a whole-school reading culture. We will
be participating in this programme to give our
next intake of Year 7 students the opportunity to
choose their own book to keep from a list of 17
titles selected by a panel of experts. In previous
years our Year 7s read their book and
participated in an inter-Tutor Group Bookbuzz
Quiz. Ms Slaven reported that the
programme encouraged students to read more
and gave students a more positive attitude
towards reading, and we believe Bookbuzz is a
wonderful gift for our new students to kick start
their reading journey through Nova Hreod.
