Exciting Introduction to Robotics

Last week, Catalyst STEM Stream hosted a dynamic taster session for a group of local Year 6 pupils who had enrolled due to their enthusiasm and curiosity about science, technology, engineering and maths. They were presented with a series of high-level mathematical exercises before being challenged to code a robot to perform a sequence of programmed actions — a task that demanded logic, precision, and teamwork.

Dr Sam Spreadbury, who led the workshop, said: It was wonderful to watch the students handle the challenges we set for them. They showed such enthusiasm in solving the complex exercises and they didn’t just solve the problems - they explored, experimented and supported each other throughout the day, which is exactly what the programme aims to encourage.”

Year 6 student Cooper summed up the spirit of the day perfectly: “This is so much fun and exactly why I love maths! If it was easy, it wouldn’t be as much fun.”

At the end of the workshop, the participants were presented with a STEM-related gift to celebrate develop their curiosity and as a keepsake to remind them of their experience.

The Catalyst programme has been operating at Nova Hreod Academy since September 2022 and is aimed at children with a passion for STEM subjects. It offers intensive learning with a strong focus on science, engineering, technology and maths for students in Key Stage 3, while also providing and opportunities for them to gain an academic advantage.

The workshop is part of a series designed for pupils considering joining the school’s Catalyst STEM Stream, to give prospective students a taste of the kind of engaging learning they can expect, and to showcase the school’s commitment to STEM excellence.

We will host further STEM taster sessions in December and January. Parents and guardians interested in learning more about the programme are encouraged to contact the school or visit Catalyst Stream Events | Catalyst Stream Admissions
